We are all born with ambitions, with dreams and with ideas that at some point we are all 100% certain will materialise into reality. It doesn’t just happen once or twice, it happens daily and throughout our lives however as we grow older and busier we begin to dismiss these dreams as ‘has been’ ideas that are better left to the side of our to-do pile for some reason or another. It becomes oh so easy to forget about yourself sometimes and focus everything you have on those around you. I mean, you’re a super nice person right?
It’s not how good you are, it’s how good you want to be. This sentence has resonated with me for the past two years, ever since I was gifted this book as a Birthday present and which is a phrase which I expect will stay with me for, I hope, the rest of my life time. If you are like me and constantly have a million and one things to do whilst always putting others before yourself in both your business and personal life, then you will agree that self improvement is not always (or is hardly ever) at the top of your to do list. There are simply not enough hours in the day to upgrade from Super Woman to Wonder Woman…just kidding…am I?
Likewise with a post I recently wrote Wake Up. Kick Ass. Repeat. I really do not think that there is anymore of a valid time to write about the wonders Paul Arden has managed to roll into this one publication than now. As an EA with a good few years under my belt, I was under no illusion when I started my new job (currently 6 weeks in and going strong!) that being the ‘new girl’ would include a tough few transition months. What I wasn’t expecting however was to really be thrown out of my comfort zone and into an environment where I really have had a few major wobbles now and then…no one’s perfect!
In the hope of fixing my first world new job problems and putting the sparkle back into my enthusiasm, I recently dodged the wine fridge and headed straight for my bookshelf to advertising expert Paul Arden’s masterpiece on how to succeed in the world. This baby really is something for everyone and will help make the unthinkable thinkable and the impossible possible…how good does that sound right?!
With bite sized inspirational and uplifting tips, tricks and generally motivational words of wisdom that Master Arden slaps you in the face with, It’s Not How Good You Are But How Good You Want To Be is described as a pocket bible for making the most of yourself and as I initially mentioned above, this is definitely something I feel I could prioritise more often. This book goes places where no one has been before and without spoiling anything…who knew there could ever be an upside to being fired?! Ok, probably not a great example to place on a blog centered around the lives of professionals but you get my drift.
Paul makes it easy to schedule self improvement time as once you start reading you’re completely hooked (or I was at least) but more importantly he makes you want to stick to it, it’s like that nicotine habit you wish you had kicked in the balls but glad you wasn’t able to. You may think that before reading this book it is totally unnecessary that you pay the outrageously expensive £4.79 (uhurm..what now?) as you have all the skills required to keep doing what you’re doing but guys, come on…make a little time for yourself and direct a bit of your love your way for once.
Remember…it’s not good you are, it’s how good you want to be 🙂
Lot’s of love,
Jess x
