Eating at: Tom, Dick & Harry’s, Essex

Jess | Editor In Chief

Tom, Dick and Harry’s is a stylish new restaurant that is anything but ordinary. Moreish, modern small plates, an unrivalled selection of beautiful wines and inventive cocktails, a build-your-own Bloody Mary bar, live music and the Sunday Roast Club are just some of what this newly opened brasserie in Loughton Essex has to offer.

Stylish interiors with a glass front that opens onto an al fresco terrace during the warmer months, Tom, Dick and Harry’s has a contemporary design with a mix of modern and vintage furniture. Industrial features contrast with soft, luxe fabrics and a vibrant pop of colour throughout the venue making this a beautiful all day dining restaurant and bar, easily accessible via the Central Line from London.

Warmly welcomed on a Sunday afternoon we sat down and glanced through the menu, lovingly created and prepared from scratch by Head Chef Michael Carter. The menu features signature dishes in the form of Nibbleinis – small plates combining locally sourced British ingredients with Mediterranean flavours. Larger plates include tartine of Cornish Crab with Isle of Wight tomatoes and celery; chargrilled octopus served with tomato, chickpeas and ‘N’duja; and mustard glazed pork spare ribs with apple salad.

If splashing the cash was on your agenda, more luxurious options include dishes such as whole or half lobster; chargrilled tuna with romesco, spring onion and almonds; and 20-day aged steaks in a variety of cuts. Other mains include baked aubergine with feta cheese, walnuts, spring onions; and Tom’s burger – a 100% British beef patty served with caramelised onion, smoked bacon, rocket and Cheddar cheese.

So what did we think of the menu and as always, what were our recommendations? Sitting at the bar with a view over the open kitchen, we opted for the small plates (Nibbleinis) with cocktails.

Our order? The British burrata with pine nuts, salsa verde and rocket (£8), heritage beetroot with ricotta and hazelnuts (£7), fried crisp Cornish squid with smoked chili, salt, pepper and lime (£7) and chorizo with cornish mussels, tomato and chickpea stew (£8). Accompanied by two Tom Hardy cocktails – the ‘I Liked You Better When You Were Drunk’ consisting of citron vodka, Cinzano, grapefruit, lemon, basil and brown sugar.

Perfectly proportioned, beautifully presented and big on flavour, we are officially in love with Tom, Dick and Harry’s Nibbleinis menu. Our top two ranking plates? We could have had the burrata and the heritage beetroot Nibbleinis on repeat for the rest of the day.

And what about the Tom Hardy cocktails? Again, beautifully presented and moreish, if it was a Bank Holiday we could have stayed for the entire afternoon…

Final thoughts – Tom, Dick and Harry’s in Loughton has created a beautiful menu with refreshingly addictive cocktails perfect for every occasion.
